Instant Messaging (IM): A form of real-time text message between two or more people. The text is conveyed via computers connected over a network such as the Internet. Popular application examples include, but are not limited to: AIM AOL Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Jabber, and ICQ Messenger.
Peer-To-Peer (P2P) File Sharing: The uploading and downloading of files from other personal computers. These 'other personal computers' are the "peers" in a network (a network such as the Internet). Popular application examples include, but are not limited to: Limewire, Kazaa, WinMX, Ares, SoulSeek, Frostwire.
BitTorrent: A peer-to-peer file sharing protocol. This particular protocol is used for large amounts of data. Popular application examples include, but are not limited to: Azureus, BitTorrent, uTorrent, BitComet, Transmission, BitLord.
Remote Login: Refers to logging in to a computer via a remote method, i.e., a method other than being physically at the computer and logging in.
PC Anywhere: Remote Login software that allows users to access a computer's desktop from a remote location, via the internet or a dialup modem. An example of its use would be an employee accessing their work pc from home, or vice versa.
RDP: Remote Desktop Protocol. This allows a user to connect to a computer in the network running a compatible Microsoft Windows operating system.
SSH: Secure Shell protocol. A network protocol that allows data to be exchanged using a secure channel between two networked devices.
Telnet: Telecommunication network protocol used on the Internet/LAN (local area network). This protocol is like SSH but is not secure.
Email: Electronic mail, such as that created by the Microsoft Outlook program.
FTP: File Transfer Protocol. This network protocol is used to transfer data from one computer to another.
Nonproxied SSL: This protocol communication occurs when a computer that is not using a proxy attempts to access a secure Web site.
Streaming Media: Multimedia that is constantly received and presented to an end-user. Examples would be radio, movies, videos, etc.
VMWare: Virtual machine software. Provides virtualized set of hardware to the guest operating system.
